Celebrating the Lunar New Year Holiday at MFSC

The Multicultural Family Service Center (MFSC) in Ansan hosted special events for multicultural families and foreign workers to celebrate the Lunar New Year holiday in Korea.

The first event was a fashion show on February 7, 2016. For three months, about thirty participants had gathered every Saturday evening for a free class on making clothes. At the show, the participants presented their various styles of clothes and accessories. Their work expressed the designers’ individuality as well as their cultural origins. It was a wonderful opportunity for many of them to discover their hidden gifts.

The MFSC also held their 4th multicultural cooking contest, which was supported by Ansan Migrant Community Service Center run by the Korean government. Ten teams from Cambodia, Russia, China, Uzbekistan, and Bangladesh participated in the contest, showing off traditional food from their own countries. Russian participants won the top prize with “mimoza,”a Russian potato salad. The next prize went to the Chinese team with their “dumplings” followed by the Cambodians with“lok lak,” which is their traditional beef salad.

“I hope that these events brought enjoyment to immigrants and foreign workers who could not spend the holidays in their home countries and that everyone had a good time with one another,”said Pastor Kim YoungSoo, director of Ansan MFSC.

It has been seven years since the MFSC was established and started reaching out to foreign workers and multicultural families. Some of them were suffering from fraud, delayed payment of wages, assault, and a feeling of alienation. The MFSC will continue trying to help them to live happier lives and to ultimately share God’s love with them through the different activities.
