A Week of Prayer Embracing Family Diversity in Nepal

From September 1–7, 2024, the Family Ministries Department of the Nepal Section (formerly known as the Himalayan Section) organized an online Week of Prayer, focusing on the theme Growing Hearts of Welcome for Diverse Families. Each evening from 7–9 pm, over 400 participants joined via Zoom to engage in spiritual messages and prayer. Distinguished speakers delivered inspiring messages, addressing various aspects of family life and faith.

The thematic content of the Week of Prayer included key topics such as: God Loves Diversity, Jesus Welcomes Children and Adults, Jesus Welcomes Women and Men, Jesus Welcomes People from Every Culture, Jesus Welcomes People with Disabilities, Jesus Welcomes the Rich and Poor, and finally, Growing Welcoming Hearts.

On Sabbath, September 7, all churches under the Nepal Section held special programs, led by different families, with an emphasis on Family Worship – Back to the Altar. These programs highlighted the importance of understanding diverse family structures and their role within the church. Local communities were also invited, offering an opportunity for families to learn more about Jesus and engage with the church.

The initiative, led by the World Church Family Ministries (FM) Department, focused on the theme of family diversity. As the Seventh-day Adventist Church is made up of many kinds of families—single parents, foster and adoptive families, blended families, and more—this week aimed to raise awareness about the church’s role in welcoming all family types. Shanti Pokharel, FM director of the Nepal Section, stated “The church must recognize this diversity and approach these families with love and compassion, understanding that the church is not just a building but the people.”

Many of the challenges families face today are rooted in living in a sinful and broken world, where people often turn away from God’s guidance. Events like this Week of Prayer provide a platform for families to reconnect with God and find renewed strength in faith. For many church leaders, members, and attendees, the program was an eye-opening experience that helped them renew their commitment to the Lord and the mission of welcoming all families with open hearts.
