October 2, 2019, entered into the history of Adventist education in Mongolia as one of the most memorable days of all. On that day, Tusgal School, the only Adventist mission school in Mongolia, was chosen as the best private school in Chingeltei District, Ulaanbaatar! This is wonderful, but the story does not start on this day but a year earlier.
Being the only Adventist school in Mongolia, Tusgal School carries an important role. This school was the result of a "Pauline boldness" of the Mongolians 10 years ago, and there is heritage to carry on. Also, balancing the bills and the mission has been a constant challenge of the school during the last decade. This has helped the school to mature.
In March 2018, after a long inspection by the Mongolian government, the school received a disappointing final report. Within 6 months, it had to meet the government’s demands or the school would lose its license. It was notable that meeting those government demands meant practically building a new school, and this was far from the capacity of the school. At the same time, the school administration was dreaming of a boarding school for our Mongolian children.
By the grace of God and the support of the Adventist World Church, one of the 13 Sabbath offerings of 2018 helped us to renovate the school, or rather, helped us practically construct a new building. Praise the Lord and in September 2018, Tusgal School was reopened and another new year began. Amen!
Two statements motivated the school administration and teachers during this process: (1) More important than result is the direction; (2) Reformation without revival is not reformation. That is exactly how they felt as they looked forward to having a renewed building. The school leaders said, “We must now pack up, do our share by being faithful to God’s plan for Adventist Education, and He will take care of the results.” And He did so! The beauty of working for the Lord is that everything is His! He dreamed of Adventist education, and He revealed the principles of Adventist educational philosophy to Ellen White. The land and building are dedicated to Him, so Tusgal School, as any other Adventist institution, belongs to the Lord.
The school family consider it a privilege to work for God! For that reason, in the last year, the school administration, with the help of all teachers, worked diligently seeking to renew and renovate the school interior. There was no intention of winning recognition. “What we were looking for was only the certainty of being on the right track despite mistakes and successes,” said the administration team. And it was so. On October 2, 2019, the same government that had a year before given the school a six-month-deadline ultimatum that put the school license at risk, awarded Tusgal School recognition as the best private school in the district among 30 other schools. Let us include Tusgal School in our prayers, that the Lord will help us to grow Adventist education in Mongolian and that many more children will get to know Jesus.
This school year, about 200 students enrolled in Tusgal School. With the denominational accreditation granted by the Adventist Accrediting Association (AAA) in 2017, Tusgal School continues doing its best for God’s glory. We believe in the encouraging words of the Lord: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
Bible Study in Teacher’s Morning Worship
The first 30 minutes of every school day for the teachers of Tusgal School is dedicated for morning worship. Over the past year, the teachers have studied the Bible during the morning worship. Pastor Diogo Santos, vice president of Tusgal School, has been teaching the 28 fundamental beliefs of the Adventist Church to the teachers. All distinctive doctrines of our Church are being covered. The Bible study is intentional, considering that there are some non-Adventist teachers and staff members working for the school. We are praying that in the near future, some of the teachers and staff members will accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior! Despite some limitations in doing evangelism, Tusgal School is doing its best to bring people to Christ.
