AAA Interim Visit to Sahmyook Health College and Sahmyook University

The Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges and University (AAA) made an interim visit to Sahmyook Health University College (SHUC) from February 9 to 11, 2014. This visit was one of the conditions for accreditation recommended in the regular evaluation visit in 2012. It was because there was a change of leadership at the SHUC and also there was a major concern on the physical development of school that the visiting team felt that it would be appropriate to review SHUC’s progress toward fulfilling the recommendations by the last evaluation committee.

The interim committee was made up of the following members:  Dr Mike Lekic, GC Associate Education Director, chair; Dr Chek Yat Phoon, NSD Education Director, secretary; Dr Barbara Choi, NSD Health Director; Dr Fred Hardinge, GC Associate Health Director, Mr Ken Osborn, NSD Treasurer; and Dr Brian Wong, former Vice-President of Academic Affairs of Caribbean Union College. The visiting committee was very impressed that the institution had made very significant progress in implementing the recommendations of the previous regular visit committee and was also very please to recommendto AAA that the accreditation of Sahmyook Health University College be maintained until December 31, 2016.

After the visit to SHUC, the same AAA team also made an interim visit to Sahmyook University (SU) from February 11 to 13, 2014. This was due to the projected change of leadership in SU, that the regular evaluation committee that visited SU in 2011 also made an interim visit as one of the conditions for accreditation. Further, there were 2 new PhD degrees in Nursing and in Public Health being offered by SU and hence, the International Board of Education (IBE) visiting committee made up of the following individuals:Dr Mike Lekic, GC Associate Education Director, chair; Dr Chek Yat Phoon, NSD Education Director, secretary; Dr Barbara Choi, NSD Health Director; Dr Fred Hardinge, GC Associate Health Director, Mr Ken Osborn, NSD Treasurer; and Dr Peek EunHee, SHUC Professor of Nursing, also evaluated these new programs.

SU had accomplished 92% of the recommendations of the 2011 evaluation visit.  Because of this significant accomplishment, the team will recommend to AAA that the accreditation of Sahmyook University be maintained until December 31, 2016.  The IBE team also will recommend that the 2 PhD programs be included in the accreditation of Sahmyook University.
