The 2017 Northern Asia-Pacific Division (NSD) Presidents’ Council of the Adventist HealthCare Association (AHCA) was held from September 25 to 29 at Grand Ambassador, Seoul, Korea. About 35 Adventist hospital administrators, medical doctors, department heads, and guest speaker, together representing 11 member hospitals from the NSD and one associate member, Penang Adventist Hospital, participated in the council. Sahmyook Medical Center, which is an Adventist hospital in Seoul, under the leadership of Dr. Choi MyungSup, the president, was the host hospital to prepare hotel accommodations, daily programs and logistical assistance.
The Presidents’ Council is an annual event for hospital administrators and leaders to meet and renew their friendships and to have fellowship with each other for spiritual enrichment, networking and continuing education. The guest speaker for this year’s council was Dr. Robert Cherry, the chief medical and quality officer for UCLA Health in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Dr. Cherry presented a two-morning seminar on the subjects of “Clinical Quality and Safety Management,” “How to Improve Patient Experience,” “How to Provide Value to Patients,” “Strategic Development of Client-based Healthcare Initiatives,” etc.
Dr. Cherry used a lot of innovative methods, such as analytics, informatics, and advanced computational techniques that are designed to raise clinical quality and improve patient experience. Many hospital administrators expressed their appreciation to the speaker for his relevant presentations.

On the first day of activities, participants visited a government hospital, Seoul Medical Center, a very modern hospital with sophisticated medical facilities. During the visit, the hospital arranged a special signing ceremony on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Seoul Medical Center and AHCA for future collaboration. Participants also visited our Sahmyook Medical Center and enjoyed a delicious welcome dinner with the management team and department heads. The beautiful dinner was prepared by the hospital.
On the second day, the participants visited another privately owned hospital, Myongji Hospital, with 700+ beds, a First Grade hospital and regional emergency center with 33 medical care system departments and 24 special medical care centers. Participants were very much impressed with their soon open VIP Ward facilities and environmentally friendly atmosphere of the physical examination center.
During the council business session, under the chairmanship of Dr. Toshihiro Nishino, AHCA president, all hospital presidents or representatives gave their annual report on each hospital performance. Many were routine agenda items. The council also voted to hold the 2018 AHCA Presidents’ Council in Sydney, Australia.
The council also re-elected Dr. Nishino, president of Tokyo Adventist Hospital, to continue to serve as AHCA president for the next two years (2018-2019). The newly-elected AHCA secretary/treasurer is Dr. Huang Hui-Ting, president of Taiwan Adventist Hospital.
AHCA is the umbrella organization over all the Adventist health care institutions within the NSD. The purpose of AHCA is to provide coordination, services, advice and networking among the hospital administrators.
