Hong Kong: Abuse Consultancy - "Crossing Boundaries" Special Seminar Conducted at Hong Kong Adventist College

May 15, 2007 Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong

"Crossing Boundaries" is the theme for the Abuse Consultancy being held at Hong Kong Adventist College from May 14-16. Organized by the Chinese Union Mission (CHUM), all other Unions and Mission field in NSD¡XJapan, Korea and Mongolia have sent delegates for this important seminar that touches on a topic that is seldom addressed in church circles. Out of the 62 participants, 42 have come from CHUM (Hong Kong and Taiwan), 3 from Japan, 9 from Korea, 4 from Mongolia. 4 NSD Department Directors also attended the meetings.

Pastor James Wu, president of the Chinese Union Mission, gave the opening address on May 14. Dr Bryan Craig, Family Ministries Director of the South Pacific Division, and Pr David Robertson, Director of Adventist Support of the SPD, are the seminar facilitators of the entire program. Although this is an initiative from the women and family ministries departments, other departments such as Education and Ministerial are also represented.

All those attending are now more aware of the issue of sexual abuse, warning signs for ministerial misconduct, guidelines for maintaining ministerial boundaries, arenas of safety, and how to handle the situation after sexual abuse has been uncovered. It is hoped that the leaders who are attending will be returning to their home fields to set in place policies that will keep our churches and institutions safe from abuse.
