NSD Mid-Year Committee Members Visit One Governmental Institute and Three Adventist Institutions

May 30 2010, Ilsan City, South Korea

The final convocation of the Northern Asia-Pacific Division Executive committee for the 2005-2010 quinquennium met at the Ilsan office from May 10-12, 2010.  Amongst the various project reports from Unions and Division departmental directors, discussions centered around the formation of a Biblical Research Committee for the Northern Asia-Pacific Division.  It was finally decided to form such a Committee to encourage theological discussion and promote unity and harmony.  Questions on the Union of Churches were clarified.

Early Tuesday morning on May 11 almost all committee members set out to visit four institutions. The first place was Seoul English Science Edu-Center, the first park of its kind in Korea, run by the governments Nowon-gu district office, Seoul. The district office has entrusted the right of operating the center to Sahmyook University. At the moment, Dr. Chong Geol Choi, director of the NSD Geoscience Research Institute and a professor of Sahmyook University, is serving as director of the center. Two thirds of the employees are Adventists. Adventist staff is trying to introduce the concept of creationism through the use of the English language to visitors.  Fossils and telescopes make up part of the attraction.

Seoul Sahmyook Elementary School, the second stop, warmly welcomed us. Kim, Young Dong, the principal, gave us a thrilling and impressive report regarding the development of the school which has received numerous awards for its outstanding work. The school is surrounded by many landscaped gardens with biblical names.

Sahmyook University, our third visit, surprised us in many ways. Particularly the one-stop-service convenience store in one building made us think about how our service should be customer-centered.

Sahmyook Food, our last stop for the day, left a deep impression. It produces one million packs of soymilk daily. Not only are their products exported to many countries, but they occupy a large percentage of the market share in Korea. It is also committed to enhancing the educational level of Adventist schools in Korea through its financial support.

Each institution spoiled the group with many gifts. They left the institution with a good impression.
