Korean Union Conference Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries Symposium

May 12 2010, Deer Mountain, South Korea

Chaplains from Korean Union Conference and Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries met for two days at Deer Mountain Retreat Center for special symposium on campus ministries and also pastoral clinical care.  Dr. Mario Ceballos and Dr. Miguel Luna met with 32 chaplains of campus ministries and Dr. Elizabeth Johnson Taylor and Dr. Siroj Sorajjakool met with 20 hospital chaplains for topics related to clinical spiritual care.

On the Campus ministries group Dr. Ceballos suggested a model for Spiritual Master Plan (SMP) for educational institutions.  According to this model there is full participation of the administration, faculties and students.   On the hospital group chaplains had a dynamic dialogue among their participants.  Many questions where presented from the audience such as how do you run a spiritual nursing team? How do you approach for spiritual care for dementia? How do you approach non-religious patients? Is it spiritual pride not to receive care from the family?  How can we win the souls of non Adventist colleagues? How can we help former patients who are baptized to remain SDA?  How to share the gospel with dying patients? If we pray enough will the dying patient will be converted?  How will I face death?  How do we deal with non SDA religious rituals? How to help patients who is eager for attention to direct to God?  These questions were addressed by professors Taylor and Sorajjakool in a friendly atmosphere.

Dr. Miguel Luna gave a presentation on chaplains as missionaries at school settings.  He explained the importance of being focus on the great commission found in Matt 28:18-20 and in looking at the needs and context of the audience.  He based his presentation on the gospel of Luke 10:1-12.  He suggested some principles in approaching students on sharing the gospel.  Chaplains need to see needs of students and use different methodologies and coming to them.  Luna suggested that we must engage in mission not on our terms and with our own agenda and vocabulary, but on the terms of the others to whom we seek to introduce God’s news.

On Friday April 30 Dr. Ceballos gave a presentation on pornography and sexual addiction for the campus ministry audience. There were open dialogues so chaplains are able to address this issue with the intention of how they may be able to help our students to overcome the problem and provide preventive strategies on campus ministries.

After the symposium words of appreciation were presented.  According to them the meetings were very useful for both clinical pastoral care and campus ministries.  Chaplains from the hospitals were very much encouraged to organize additional Clinical Pastoral education in the near future with participation of GC ACM.
